WHAT FOLLOWS IS AN ARCHIVE OF INFORMATION UNRELATED TO THE TAILGATE PROJECT EXCEPT AS HISTORY

Senate Bill 349 is Legislation that affects us all equally:  We All Breathe, Drink Water, Use Land, drive on local roads!

Protest the legislation SB349 relating to Local Regulation ALL WISCONSIN RESOURCES in all towns, villages, counties, all over the state. making the DNR the only unit of government able to set legal regulations of water and air quality for all  Descriptions stating this is just a mining law are misleading. This affects all resources of Wisconsin! You, your family, your local existence! For everyone, everywhere in Wisconsin!

DNR will not have enough employees to oversee the actual carrying out of the law, nor does the DNR view itself as a regulatory agency, only a 'permitting' agency! This is based on a statement by Cathy Stepp, the Director of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Please call all your local representatives and ask them to become thoroughly informed about all the elements of SB349.

Please send a letter or email to each of these representatives as well. Written letters are very powerful. You don't have to know all the details, just give the major points of concern about the legislation, which you can find listed Here:

Windsor Town Board Members

DeForest Village Board Members

Please attend the Oct. 24th Hearing, 9:00am at the Capitol, then: The Oct 24th, 12:00-noon Rally against The Terrible Tiffany Takeover Legislation SB349

While we still can, We need to Say NO!

Press Release Giving Major Elements of SB349: Here   remember please, the bill now has new name:  SB349

Please make lots of signs with Big, Dark, Wide print

WE ALL NEED CLEAN WATER, WE ALL NEED CLEAN AIR, WE ALL NEED TO PROTECT OUR LAND, LANDFORMS, AND PUBLIC FACILITIES SUCH AS TOWN ROADS, COUNTY ROADS, VILLAGE ROADS.  WE ARE IN THIS TOGETHER! SEE YOU AT THE CAPITOL!

Excellent, John, and now the bill has new name: SB349 because it has gone to committee and will have its first hearing tomorrow, Oct 24th at 9:00am at the WI Capitol. We hope to see your letter in the DeForest Times Tribune tomorrow as well! Also urging all concerned to write to papers and legislators on this issue and ask them if we will all be able to breathe well in the next calendar year and if our water cleanliness standards will drop, or chemicals can be spilled and not be cleaned up because our over-worked DNR has too few employees to follow up on violations and complaints—- since we know they are 2 years behind on many cases already. We are really worried about the health and safety of our families, it is they who will suffer!

    Dear Editor:

Local control is under attack again. There is a bill on the fast track in the Wisconsin legislature that seeks to remove powers from towns, villages, cities, and counties, and place those powers in state agencies.

LRB-3146/1 is called the “Regulatory Certainty Act.” It abolishes local authority to regulate land use having to do with water quality and quantity, expansion of mines and other large industrial operations, and other related air and water issues. Currently, towns have authority to protect the public health and general welfare of their residents. This bill would take that power away from towns and place it in the state bureaucracy. It also limits the ability of local governments to negotiate reimbursements for damage done to roads by heavy truck use.

Unfortunately, this bill and its companion, LRB-3408/1, are on a fast track and might even be out of committee before you read this letter. They are being ushered through the legislative process by the party in power in Madison, the party of big business and big money. Ironically, it is the same party that claims to want to preserve smaller government and local control. That party’s actions do not match its stated philosophy.

There is one way to prevent further deterioration of our local government home rule tradition in Wisconsin. Next time, vote for the party of the people. Next time, vote Democrat.

    Sincerely,

    John Scepanski

Super! Also, call your local town or village officials and urge them to call THEIR state senate and assembly reps to tell them NOT to undercut local governments like this!!!!
