This year’s speaker is Caren AStelson, author of Sachiko: A Nagasaki Bomb Survivor’s Story.
  • Sun – Aug 20 – Progressives of NE Dane County Meet UP – noon-5PM Token Creek Park Shelter One

We confirmed September 9th as the date we host the quarterly Progressive Partners (of the 2nd Congressional District) in DeForest at the Jefferson Square Clubhouse, 717 DeForest Street in DeForest.  JonSki has reserved the Clubhouse.  We thought this meeting might provide a good springboard for the Wausau event October 7th (see below).  Stacy said she would be glad to lead a discussion on what’s going on “up north.”  JohnSki is to alert PP member organizations to reserve that date.  More details and agenda later.

Ginny reminded everyone of the Vinehout meet-and-greet.  See below under Political Discussion after Adjourn.

Ginny, John St., Karen, and Marcia intend to go and will probably ride together in Ginny’s van.  Contact Ginny if you can go.

Karen and John St. attended the last meeting of the Wisconsin Grassroots Network Task Force.

Karen reported on her attendance at the latest “350” meeting.  Carl Sack, a UW cartographer whom Karen knows, talked about how maps win elections.  The best maps win.  Maps can be propaganda: cf. How to Lie with Maps.  How maps asre constructed and illustrated, for example, can send messages.

John Stanley reported on progress being made organizing the northern Wisconsin progressive festival at the Wausau Labor Temple on October 7th.  Art Shegonee will do the opening.  It is hoped that we will get participation from the native American communities.  John Nichols and Mike McCabe have committed to being there.  John thinks that Dennis Kucinich, former Congress member from Michigan, will be there.  Stacy said that we need organizing committees NOW to get to work.  There is a big meeting scheduled for tomorrow.  There has been a title designated yet.  Stacy suggested “The Goodwill Festival in Wausau.”

We have a busy few months coming up with the events mentioned above as well as Karen’s Democratic Party event at Token Creek Park (See Political Discussion below after Adjourn).  For that reason we have to tell Paul Cienfuegos that we cannot devote time to community rights for awhile.  Paul will be leading his weekend workshop in Washburn County, WI, Sept 15-17.

I, JohnSki, had to leave the meeting early, so Karen provided these notes for the rest of the meeting.

From Karen…

Old Business  * means PERMANENT ITEM ** means on agenda for limited time

More Wausau Fest:

I agreed to send Stacy my Broken heart Wisconsin design for her husband to work on to see if it might be the germ of a logo for Wausau. The conference call on 7/18 is to come up with a name. I complained about the WGN meeting last week and this week's D-WAG meeting being used as working meetings for the Wausau Fest.

*Messaging – Scott Wittkopf has a new daily messaging tip program via email – is anyone interested? John Stanley was the only one expressing interest.

Letters to the editor~ Anyone willing to write contact Janet at millsey77@charter.net .    A sample LTE can be seen at: http://host.madison.com/ct/opinion/mailbag/kathleen-williams-tell-legislators-you-want-hearing-on-statewide-vote/article_659fad7d-5c20-51b0-954f-882426df89c0.html

- The discussion here was two pronged: a) why can't the letter writing committee handle this and b) put it as an announcement. I elected b) since I am the surviving member of the letter writing committee.

Every Tuesday at 1:15PM – Indivisible/OWR meets to visit a legislator. Are we interested in joining them to meet with Jagler and/or Fitzgerald or Luther Olsen?

-The decision was to drop this. I changed it to an announcement.

• Conversations with Jagler about AJR53 – has anyone pushed Jagler for a hearing in past week?  - no one had.

• Item added by John St – Wausau WGN Fest – Labor Temple venue $400 cost – we agreed to pay $75 to hold date if John St. could not get WGN approval in time.

-This brought up more information that "WE" had agreed to share the cost of Dennis Kucinich's travel & lodging for the Wausau Fest. I asked who "WE" was. The answer was "WGN."  I believe that the dollar amount that D-WAG agreed to should be $100 - John pls. verify.

• The group decided that it wanted to be added on Indivisibleguide.com – Karen HAS done that. She had to agree that the group agreed with Indivisible's principles. Those present at the meeting agreed and we will stay in Indivisible! BTW - Lois Lehman is listed as "Indivisible DeForest."

• ** DWAG T-Shirts, This was discussed.  Ginny took over the project. The meeting of the 24th and 31st will be the weeks of voting on shirt colors and designs. JOHN - Ginny will need to get with you on an email to be sent along with the agenda both weeks to explain the voting!

New Business-

Discuss helping OWR get a Healthcare Forum in DeFo/Windsor? John St volunteered to handle since he has contacts with OWR.

Discuss booking our own table at LaborFest to sell buttons (cost $40) - Discussion centered on bringing our own table and whether we had sold enough buttons previously to cover the cost of the table to make it worth while. In 2015, we grossed $84 on NON-political buttons. The reason for getting our own table is to get away from the NON-purchasing crowd of talkers that the WGN folks attract. In 2016 we had such few sales that I did not even record them.

Adjourn

• Political Discussion – Date set for August get-together is 8/20 (Sunday) noon-5PM in Token Creek Park Shelter One. Columbia County Dems are on board, and Karen has official permission to download lists from VAN for mailing to invitees. Dodge County Dems are also in touch and Karen has contacted an Indivisible group in Jefferson County.

  • (ADDED BY GINNY) Tues Jul 25 – Meet and Greet State Sen. Kathleen Vinehout (thinking about a run for Gov.) 7:00 - 8:30 pm -  at the home of Beth and Mike Cox, 1000 Glenway Rd. in Oregon. The event is co-hosted by Ruthy and Ron Berger, of Active McFarland. Light food and refreshments will be provided. No campaign contribution is required, though a contribution would be appreciated. RSVP is desired but not required. If you are able, RSVP to Carlene Bechen atcdbechen@gmail.com or 608-513-7655.
