Iron-Mining

The Penokee Hills, above, is the proposed site for a large open pit iron ore mine. Now that the Army Corps of Engineers has said it won't work with the DNR on an Environmental Impact Statement, approval of the project could be delayed by years. Please take a look at the short films by Midwest Environmental Advocates.

The first film presents information about the Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Chippewa.

Iron-mining issues will be present in Wisconsin for many years. Our goal is to inform and keep learning, then take action when we understand what is about to happen and what is at stake!  Please watch this page which we will fill with info, videos, photos, articles, links, announcements of events.  Please take a look, take action, comment, pass it on to others!

In the mood for a nice road trip? If you have the time, go visit the Penokees. From Madison, it is about a five hour drive up US Highway 51.

If you cannot go see the area in person, check out some other resources:

Wisconsin Network for Peace and Justice Mining Focus site:

Also check out the state legislative resources at http://legis.wisconsin.gov/ for information on your Senator and Assembly representative, as well as the non-partisan legislative service agencies (Joint Legislative Counsil, Legislative Audit Bureau, Legislative Fiscal Bureau, Legislative Reference Bureau and the Legislative Technology Services Bureau).

For broadband users (and some cable users), the WisconsinEye service (http://legis.wisconsin.gov/Pages/default.aspx) archived videos of most legislative hearings and carries many of them live. This service also carries many other public events live or covers them and archives the videos for public reference.
